Hey Letterpress Peeps,
ILL reader, Lauren, is looking for letterpress classes in or near Orange County (CA) besides Otis. She can go as far as LA County. Do you have any recommendations for her?

If you’re willing to travel to Pasadena, the Armory Center for the Arts offers letterpress classes. Here’s the link:

Thanks Carrie! Pasadena isn’t too far for me. $285 is a lot more reasonable than the beginning letterpress class I found at Otis (about $500!). Do you happen to know if they hold these classes year round? I can’t make it to the session that starts on Monday.
(Khris, do you have the subscribe to comments plugin installed? It might facilitate conversations here!)
Hi Lauren Marie!
Yes, the Armory does have classes all year around. Otis and Art Center are both really pricey. I graduated from Otis, but my alumni discount does nothing for me. The classes at the Armory are great to get your feet wet. The class size is small and you’ll learn on a Vandercook and a C&P. You’ll also learn how to use foundry type, which is really quite fun! Good Luck and Happy Printing!
So awesome! Thanks Carrie! And thanks to you, too, Khris, for posting this question for me
I’ll look into taking that class next quarter. How exciting!!
I’ve been dying to get into letterpress for years in the general LA area too. Another option (although extremely expensive) is Art Center at Night in Pasadena
The school is fantastic and I’m saving up for one of their classes (I just have to decide which one!).
Just wanted to update you that I’m currently taking a shorter summer session class at Pasadena Armory of the Arts! It’s a month-long class at $120. I thought it would be a smaller commitment (of time and money) if I didn’t end up liking it, but I love it! I’m also working on restoring an Vandercook SP15. If you’re intersted to watch the progress on that, I’ve set up a Flickr set and check out my blog for more in-depth commentary (on the class and restoration).
Hi! Is there a difference between the letterpress class conducted at Pasadena Armory of the Arts versus Otis? I was thinking of taking the Otis class until I came onto this site and if the class in Pasadena is similar - I’ll definitely take the Pasadena one! It’s definitely cheaper!
